A Toxic Brew
Children of alcoholics can suffer the same levels of trauma as combat soldiers. It’s a trauma they carry with them throughout their lives. Approximately 45% of Americans have been exposed to alcoholism in the family and 26.8 million of them are children. Children of alcoholics are more likely to become alcoholics, drug abusers, or married to an alcoholic. Psychotherapy is strongly recommended for adult children of alcoholics. Some of the characteristics they display are: they can only guess what normal behavior is; they have difficulty completing projects, they judge themselves mercilessly, and they have difficulty having fun.
