Attachment and the Intergenerational Transmission of Trauma
Attachment disorders are created in early childhood by a number of factors. Recently, posttraumatic stress disorder has been added to the list. Three types of attachment styles are evidenced by adults in the way they relate to those they love. Most people are lucky enough to have a secure attachment style. One third, however, are said to have avoidance style or a disorganized/disorienting style. Avoidance style is said to be the result of being abused as a child. Disorganized/disorienting style is said to come from having a frightened or frightening parent. Parents with PTSD, it has been discovered, may have similar parenting styles to those with drug addictions or alcohol dependence.
