Disaster Stress and Older Adults
In the wake of a natural disaster such as hurricane Sandy, there is no doubt that stress is running high as those affected seek to restore normalcy. But for older adults that stress can be magnified, especially for those living alone or far from close relatives. Senior stress can manifest itself differently, and older adults are more likely to withdraw and become disoriented and confused after disaster strikes. If your loved ones have weathered a disaster, be on the lookout for symptoms of senior stress, especially fear of losing their independence. Provide reassurance and support, and even seek the help from a crisis counselor to help ease anxiety during such a difficult time.
