Does EMDR Work?
Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy (EMDR) is a treatment for PTSD, addictions, and phobias, and was invented by Francine Shapiro, a California psychologist, in the late 80s. In this therapy, a finger or baton is waved rapidly in front of the client who follows the movement with his eyes. The rapid eye movements loosen knots in memory and allow favorable reprocessing of negative thoughts and memories with little guidance from the therapist. Speculation about how it works ranges from comparing it to REM sleep to speculation that it brings the hemispheres of the brain into greater balance, but no one is sure. Over two million people, however, have benefitted from this therapy.
