Grief in the Aftermath
Hurricane Sandy has long gone, but the grief from the loss lingers. Unresolved grief or complicated grief shares some common qualities with PTSD. Preoccupation with loss, avoidance patterns to keep from reliving the loss, intrusive thoughts or unwanted recollections are all part of both struggles. From these unresolved issues can flow a myriad of mental health problems which, if untreated, can become life destroying. Disasters and surviving them is part of life. Grief too, is a part of life but is often mistaken as depression. Grief can be permanent, but our ability to deal with it is enhanced when we seek out help from others.
