Introducing the Communal Response to Trauma (CRT) Index
Laura K. Kerr, Ph.D., has come up with the Communal Response to Trauma Index. In the tradition of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) Index or the nation of Bhutan’s Gross National Happiness (GNH) Index or the American Human Development Project’s Human Development (HD) Index, the CRT, according to Dr. Kerr, measures, “the society’s commitment to restoring the hope and integrity of all its members following traumatic experiences.” To arrive at her evaluation, she would look at three factors: 1) the psychological openness to the impact of traumatic events, 2) the presence of myths, rituals, and legends that model communal responses to trauma and 3) the creation of public spaces devoted to healing trauma’s effects.
