Mindfulness Practice Helps Adults with Autism
The simple practice of mindfulness meditation has been shown to help adults dealing with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Researchers in Eindhoven, Netherlands, tested 42 people with ASD at the Adult Autism Center. Half were given, on a random basis, a slightly modified course of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy. The others served as a control, but were given the same treatment after the study. Results showed that the experimental group reported lower anxiety, depression and rumination, and reacted more positively to their emotions and feelings than the control group. It should be noted that the study was done using ASD participants with high level verbal skills, and suggests more promising applications for mindfulness therapy.
