Rewiring the Brain to Buffer Social Pain
As humans, we are inherently social creatures. Consequently we feel pain when we experience exclusion in social situations. For the most part we have just learned to deal with it and accept it as part of life. But at the University of Milano-Bicocca in Italy researchers studied the ability of the brain to create a “buffer” against such social pain. Results indicated that stimulation of a particular area of the brain can reduce the pain of social exclusion, reinforcing the idea that the pain is a result of the brain’s reaction to the situation more than the situation itself. Reworking our brains, then, may help for dealing with difficult emotional situations.
