The Impact of Childhood Abuse on Women’s Adult Relationships
Childhood abuse causes a myriad of psychological and physical problems. Among them are the emotional problems of post-traumatic stress, anxiety and depression. A study conducted by Alessandra Rellini at the University of Vermont’s Psychology Department looked at the long term effects of childhood maltreatment upon 192 women ranging in age from 18 to 25. They were asked to fill out an online survey and, perhaps not surprisingly, a direct correlation was found to exist between the severity of abuse and a lack of satisfaction with adult relationships. What was surprising was that no direct connections existed between emotional regulation impairment and intimacy or emotional expression. More study, Rellini suggests, is needed.
