Trauma and Resilience: What Doesn’t Kill You Makes You Stronger?
We’ve all heard the saying that what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger. Is it true? Researchers from the University of Buffalo recently looked at traumatic experiences to find out if they actually make people psychologically stronger. They found that not experiencing enough adversity in our lives can actually be harmful. People who experience multiple traumatic events in their lives have high levels of distress, functional impairment, and post-traumatic stress symptoms. Those who haven’t experienced trauma in their lives show the same levels of distress, functional impairment, and PTSD symptoms. To achieve the highest level of satisfaction with life we need to hit the “sweet spot” between too much and not enough trauma.
