Trauma and the Benefits of Writing About It
Art Markman Ph. D. states it simply, “Psychological trauma is bad for your health.” Suffering through a traumatic experience may lead to any of several symptoms. Lashing out at others, withdrawal, and physical illness are among them. A study published in Psychological Science found writing about traumatic experiences to have mental and physical health benefits. Some of the participants were asked to spend three days writing about one or more traumatic events. A control group was asked to write about unemotional subjects. Researchers found the group that wrote about difficult, traumatic topics suffered less physical illness and less depression for months and even years following the study’s completion.
