Understanding the Connection Between Trauma and Memory
When dealing with severe trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder, it can be a crippling and dramatic impact on daily life. While it may not seem healthy, the difficulty in forgetting trauma is believed by some to be an evolutionary adaptation for survival. In a broader view, it makes sense that remembering traumatic and dangerous experiences would lead us to avoid them in the future. In cases such as physical and sexual abuse, however, forgetting trauma would seem to be more socially adaptive. The relationship between memory and trauma is complicated and defense mechanisms like dissociation need to be considered when working through trauma.
